Leah Waarvik loves animals and has always known that she wanted to work with them. Inspired by the rescue dogs that served in the aftermath of September 11, 2001, and by her love of the outdoors, she decided to train in wilderness search and rescue. Ms. Waarvik and her dog Emma are members of the Alameda County Sheriff's Office Search and Rescue team and of CARDA, the California Rescue Dog Association. Together they respond to rescue calls statewide. Leah is certified by the National Association of Search and Rescue, and after Hurricane Katrina, she spent two weeks in Louisiana rescuing hundreds of pets.
I decided to write I Sit and Stay after hearing stories of children who were lost and unprepared. I came to realize that the great presentations put on by search-and rescue teams weren’t reaching enough children......I wanted to create an option that was a bit more available and interactive for families that enjoy being outdoors. I Sit and Stay covers the basic principles of survival and is meant to initiate an interactive process between adults and children. - Leah Waarvik
“I Sit and Stay, written for children, with essential and fun parental interaction, contains the absolute basics that all children should know to help themselves survive and to be found if they become lost in the wilderness. Parents, you may rest easier knowing your child possesses the knowledge, basic equipment, and skills contained in this fun guide. I can assure you that we in the search and rescue profession will. I highly recommend this guide!"
Matt Scharper, California State Search and Rescue Coordinator-Governor’s Office of Emergency Services.

A brilliant, insightful resource that all parents should share with their children. The principles in I Sit and Stay can help all lost persons be found safe, making the great outdoors much more enjoyable for everyone!”
Eric Sheets, President CARDA & K9 Handler
“Parents, you need to share the information in this book with your children. It could save their lives!” Ron Seitz, Chief-Alameda County Sheriff’s Office Search and Rescue & K9 Handler
